On the last day of May, 1917, 16th Rifle Brigade of 117 Brigade, 39th Division were relieved from the front line in the Hill Top sector of the Ypres salient. Battalion HQ and two of the companies moved back to a camp near Poperinghe while the other two companies went into Ypres itself where they were employed for a week working on the railway there under the supervision of the Canadian engineers. Ypres was always a target for the German artillery so this was dangerous work and casualties were incurred on a daily basis. One of these was George Platt who was killed on 3rd June. |
